I’m curious how other sales teams’ low performances are being handled this year?
Are sellers mostly being let go for low numbers? Or are teams waiting out the storm a bit by keeping most of the team (despite low performance) and hoping the economy improves in '24?
It was a mix for us. Poor performance was definitely a factor, but not the only factor that played into someone being let go.
If we observe that you’re doing what we’re asking you to do, are motivated, but not making your number it’s on us as a leadership team to give you better guidance and tools to succeed.
But if you’re not showing us you’re taking our coaching to heart and changing your behavior accordingly, using the tools we put in place, AND not making your numbers, you have no future with us.

Like many tech companies, Microsoft laid off about 10K last year, but very few were in Sales. If you didn’t make your number, there was forgiveness. This year business is booming because of AI so less of an issue. Now if you didn’t make your number for several years or weren’t getting with the program, you were probably encouraged to seek a new role or move on. Folks tend to move around a lot horizontally to learn the business before they settle into a career track. And others leave and then come back in a new role.
