One tactic I’ve seen used often is to comment on something in their Zoom Room or office, or even a background picture. Many times they will be things that mean sometime to them and they are proud and eager to talk about. It may fall under the BS category, but it does loosen people up, and allow you to launch into a conversation more naturally

Virtually, the Zoom background can especially make for a great conversation-starter. That tip is a great one.

@tim.hartwell agreed, those can be tough. When this happens, I often ask how frequent they are go into the office.
Not only will the confirm if they go into the office or not, but by knowing, I can go back to some old school tactics like send a handwritten card or do the “I am near your office this afternoon, care to meet?”.
There are a ton of strategies out there, just need to work with one that fits your comfort zone/personality.
